The morning was not busy with information requests but somehow Kalon found she had no time to sit and read. She paced the floors with her arms full, replacing works on shelves and removing others. These she carried to the basement for cleaning or repairs.
She had crossed through the long study tables before halting, doubling back. She lightly tossed her armload up to readjust them, inching towards the figure resting his platinum head on his arms.
“Innit?”
Kalon stepped back as his head snapped up, twisting this way and that to find her. She offered him a small smile for his weak, tired one.
“I ain’t got any topic in mind…. You reckon it’s fine if I just sit? I’ll still make a donation. I ain’t tryin’ to cheat y’all. I’m just… just so tired.”
“That’s just as well.” She shifted to draw more attention to her books. “I’m rather busy. I’ll be at it for weeks at the rate I’m finding books needing attention.”
She retreated from him, keeping him in the corner of her eye.
Tired was the lesser word Kalon thought of when she surveyed Innit. He looked to have gone without sleep for longer than humanly possible; the dark circles beneath his bloodshot blue eyes were stark with his skin, and his skin had a sickly hue to it. His hair was as closely cropped as ever but somehow had a straggly quality to it. He was thinner and the small movements suggested his limbs felt too heavy.
She crossed through the study area twice more before Innit silently left the table to trail after her. She passed him books she found as she continued with her duties, leaving him at the top of the basement stairs to dispose of them before starting up again.
Kalon assessed the spine of a romance novel that was coming apart from the pages. “I spoke to Khoa when he was on his way to meet you. He was buying up all the bandages at the corner store.”
“You said the old lady writes up all the news? Did she get around to Corner Seamounts?”
“Oh… so that’s your town.” She placed the book in Innit’s arms. “I did suspect when Bex mentioned you had been friends with Arios Washington.”
“Dice.” Innit kept his eyes averted. “I didn’t know him as Arios Washington. …Reckon it don’t make much difference what I call him.” He busied his hand turning the book so it rested more evenly on his short stack. “Didn’t realize Bex knew I existed, and he’s out here gossipin’ over me. I should be honored.”
“He’s shaken, and I highly suspect it is a feeling he is not accustomed to.” She scrutinized the shelf in front of her. “So… what happened with the girl in your town? Khoa made mention of–.”
“She stayed. But it ain’t how it sounds. She’s a kid. She was like my apprentice, or little sister type figure, or something.” Innit sighed deeply. “I ain’t got a clue what to do about her. I’ll have to try again to get her to leave. I just don’t know how long to wait.” Innit frowned at her. “What’s with the smirk?”
“Nothing!” Kalon scurried down the shelves. “I find it cute that you worry over her.”
She caught the red on his face, her own cheeks tinting pink.
---
Gramps’s soft, firm knock sounded on her door. “Kalon? May I open?”
Kalon hummed approval as she deftly dabbed her lips with maroon, just enough to add definition. Her green eyes locked with Gramps’s reflection to further acknowledge he was there.
“That lad is here again.”
She laughed. “Are we even open yet?” She grabbed her oils. “I’ll be right up.”
She paused in drawing down her neck with her scented pinky finger. Gramps was still waiting in the doorway. There was no trace of a smile on his heavily lined face. She twisted towards him.
“Is there something wrong, Gramps?”
“This is now a week of him visiting with no intention to use the library. I trust I’ve given you enough space before I snooped.”
“I like him.” She turned back to the mirror with a shrug, plucking at her curls that now formed a bob. “There isn’t anything more to it.”
“He’s connected to those other two. It’s one thing to let those kinds use our resources; they are for use after all. It is a different matter to become personally invested.”
“I doubt Innit is as foolish as Bex and Khoa.”
Gramps stayed grim. “I said what I came to say. Pistachio and I will trust in your judgement, Kalon, dear.”
She lingered after Gramps left to create space and give her outfit a glance over. She wore an aquamarine cardigan over her black and silver corset top due to the chill that morning. She placed a ripped tulle shirt over some skin tight capris, and went with bootlets to keep her white calves bare.
She met up with Innit in the foyer as usual, and led him from Gramps’s watchful stare into the rest of the library. She took him to the dustiest corner on the upper floor where there was sure to be books needing work.
She stretched up for a book so that her five inch heels left the ground.
“Don’t your feet hurt wearing heels like that all the time?”
“I’ll admit that at the end of the day it’s nice to take them off.” Kalon handed him the book. “That could be why I do it. It’s an extra reward for a full day of work.”
“And to be taller.”
“Of course.” She stepped up to him. “I’m taller than you when I wear heels this high.”
He squared himself. “Barely.”
Kalon could feel her heart beating the longer she kept her eyes locked with Innit’s. She took a half step nearer, feeling her body bump his for a half second before he stepped back and dropped his gaze.
He cleared his throat, swooping to grab a book from a low shelf. “This one needs help.”
She took a breath and rested her hand on his arm. She felt him tense, refusing to look her way, and then shake her off. She took a step sideways, keeping her green eyes on the musty spines.
“Kalon….”
“I’ve tried reading each one of these.” She pulled one and ran her fingers over the indented title. “They’re all in French though, so I understood practically nothing.” She smiled at him. “Don’t look so forlorn, Innit. You aren’t ready. That’s fine.”
Innit’s face clouded. He stepped away and glared at her.
“Ready? I don’t get what you mean? What ain’t I ready for?”
Kalon’s eyes rolled up as she hummed to herself. “Trust, I suppose.” She crouched to pull another book. “Yes, I think it comes down to trust.” She glanced up at his stiffened form. “It took me near a full year to trust Gramps and Grams after I came to live with them. Even so, I gloss over the details of my past. They know the basics. That’s enough.”
Innit was clinging to the books in his arms. His fingers dug into the covers, turning his nails white. He kept his sky blue eyes away from her.
Kalon said nothing further and went around to the next aisle. She paused as she heard Innit slink in, but did not turn to look.
“Did Khoa say something to you?”
“He’s said a lot to me, but not about your childhood. He’s quite protective of you.”
“Reckon that goes both ways.” Innit exhaled loudly. “I don’t know about this trust thing, Kalon. I gave it a shot already, and I’m still reelin’ from it if I’m honest.”
“Isn’t it good I’m not demanding it then.” She plucked a book, slowly turning the pages. “I rather like having you tailing me. I’m not going to make impossible demands.” She smirked impishly. “I’d have to make double the rounds just to carry everything.”
Innit laughed. “It’s nice to have my strength recognized. Magpie was the more physical–.” His little color drained. “Forget it.”
“What’s your opinion on this one?” Kalon held the book open to the middle. “The spine is loose, but it isn’t as if it gets much handling. You think I can leave it another year or so?”
“Uh, sure?” He cleared his throat. “Thanks.”

This is shorter since the next one will be a very long scene. I figured with librarians, they would know things like what the 'not-English' is called for wherever they are. I say it explicitly next scene, but Kalon lives in Dijon, France. They have an awesome, huge library there that I was originally using just for concept, but then in part 3, I had Kalon go shopping and used the streetview to map her route. So, she now is in Dijon and not some vague, random French town/city. It also made more sense for it to be a fairly large, more established town because Bex was using that library and it was long established he was traveling to it. It wasn't just a 'drive around willy-nilly oh look a library', lol. Other than all that, the one thing that makes me snicker a bit is Kalon just brushing off Khoa threatening to kill her with a 'he says a lot to me, kind of protective of you'.
